Logistics warehouses are specialized storage facilities. They are an integral part in what scientists call "the logistic process". At this point in the process, shipped goods enter specialized warehouses.
The study of these warehouses is so complex that it can be called a field of its own. Whether it is food, lumber, or any other product, there are different packaging and storing methods in logistics warehousing used to preserve the state of the goods, and secure a safe place for them to stay between transfer of delivery services.
Logisticians are people who study logistics. They research better ways to ship products and preserve them for longer. Logisticians find ways to interface with government offices and provide low-cost shipping for their customers.
Many government departments are tasked with regulating shipping and logistics warehousing. Food logistics involve special chemicals. This the FDA to be involved with logistics inspection for these situations, since drugs of some type are involved in preserving the food. The FDA inspects domestic and international vegetable and fruit logistics, while the USDA inspects meats and fish.
Warehouses that house foods are temperature-regulated. Meats are sealed with special wraps designed by logistics scientists. Warehouses that house ammunition and dangerous explosives use anti-flammable materials, in order to prevent tragic accidents.
Logistics warehousing is a multi-million dollar industry. If there were no places to store goods, our shipping systems would be extremely inefficient. Workers would have no place to drop off their goods, and they would instead be forced to haul their shipments across the country. Airplane shipping is extremely costly for small businesses, which makes ground shipping more appealing, and ground shipping can not be done without logistics warehousing.
The History of Logistics Warehousing
After the Carnegie steel age came to an end in the United States, there was an efficient and interconnected infrastructure in the country. This allowed for the expansion of shipping companies from common goods to bulk agricultural materials. Since the materials were readily availble, the global price of goods dropped.After the invention of the modern airplane, shipping became even easier. Shipping expanded from continental to international in a matter of decades. While international shipping was possible before, the transfer of goods was not complimented by the expediency and comparative luxury of the airline shipping system. Naval shipping took months at a time for goods to arrive on another continent. Even worse, most shipments were not entirely intact, thanks to a poorly-organized international trade system.
With the moderniation of international trade the and introduction of specialty logistics warehousing, shipping has become a whole lot easier. Humans can now sell their goods to people across the world. Thanks to the internet, it is even easier now to order and sell goods online.
Another interesting idea is that of digital warehousing. People spend thousands of dollars a year on using online "warehouses" to back up their digital goods. These "goods" are then transferred from computer to computer with the help of online software. One could even argue that advancements in internet speed and capabilities are concerned with logistics, because it could be considered the transfer of one thing from one place to another.Whatever comes, it is certain that logisitics warehousing will always have a place in the future.
